How to search on Google

Learn a few tips and tricks to help you easily find information on Google.

Tip 1: Start with the basics

  1. How to search for grammar No matter what you're looking for, start with a simple search like How to use a/an/the in English? You can always add a few descriptive words if necessary.
  2. How to search for vocabulary: Put define in front of any word to see its definition. Example: define committee

Don’t worry about the little things

  1. Spelling: Google's spell checker automatically uses the most common spelling of a given word, whether or not you spell it correctly.
  2. Capitalization: A search for English Language Learning is the same as a search for english language learning.
  3. place or product in a specific location: If you're looking for a place or product in a specific location, add the location. For example, Payampersa ppli.ir.

Exact search

  1. Be specific with what you want. Use quotation marks like "", here is an example: "my favorite food"
  2. Use + and - : Here is an example: "best movies -horror"
  3. Put key phrases in quotes. Here is an example: Put phrases inside quotation marks to help the search engine find exactly what you’re looking for. If you want to search a certain sequence of words together, use quotation marks on the outside of the phrase. An example is the 2021 movie Godzilla vs. Kong. Without quotations on each end of the title, a search engine would independently search for websites containing the words "Godzilla" and/or "Kong," in any order. This works with most search engines, including Google, Yahoo! and Bing.
  4. Look for something on social media. Here is an example: If you’re looking for someone or something on sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or LinkedIn, many search engines can scour these social media platforms if you specify which one, you’re interested in. Or you can simply go to websites like Twitter and do a search there. For all major search engines, type in the word or phrase and then add @ in front of the platform you'd like to search. For example: "politics @twitter" or "beach photography @instagram" (without quote marks). To search hashtags (#), put one in front of a word. For example: "#throwbackthursday" (without quote marks).
  5. Add website info into search: For example, if you want to contact Payampersa Language institute just type in: contact site:ppli.ir

Tip 2: Search using your voice

Tired of typing? To search with your voice, say "Ok Google" or select the Microphone . Learn more about how to search with your voice.

Tip 3: Choose words carefully

When you're deciding what words to put in the search box, try to choose words that are likely to appear on the site you're looking for. For example, instead of saying my head hurts, say headache, because that’s the word a medical site would use.

Tip 4: Find quick answers

For many searches, Google will do the work for you and show an answer to your question in the search results. Some features, like information about sports teams, aren't available in all regions.

  • Weather: Search weather to see the weather in your location or add a city name, like weather Isfahan, to find weather for a certain place.
  • Dictionary: Put define in front of any word to see its definition. Example: define committee
  • Calculations: Enter a math equation like 3*9123, or solve complex graphing equations.
  • Unit conversions: Enter any conversion, like 3 dollars in Rials.
  • Sports: Search for the name of your team to see a schedule, game scores and more.
  • Quick facts: Search for the name of a celebrity, location, movie, or song to find related information.
